“Listen, today again Munna agreed to eat only after much pleading, and that too while crying.”
I took my eyes away from my wife’s saddened face and kissed my only son on the cheeks. The dry trails of tears on his innocent face seemed to draw a map of my helplessness. For a while, I silently gazed at that innocent face. Then I said to my wife, “Listen, I’ll leave early for the office tomorrow morning.”
After walking to the office for a week, and after listening to my wife’s complaints, I finally managed to save enough to buy a bright red plastic car for my son. That evening, I was overwhelmed by the happiness shining through Munna’s eyes.
Several days later, as soon as I entered the house, I heard Munna sobbing.
“What happened?” I asked anxiously.
“Nothing… his little car is broken,” my wife replied.
“What do you do all day? How did it break? You keep the whole neighbourhood gathered in this house! Now you handle it yourself!” I lashed out at my wife in anger. Grief and rage had driven me almost mad.
“What could I have done?” she said in a tearful voice.
“What could you have done?” My temper rose to the boiling point.
“You know, Bablu… he is the son of your boss. Somehow, he came here to play today. I don’t even know when or how the car got broken,” my wife said softly.
“Oh?”
My anger vanished instantly. In its place was astonishment—and a strange gleam in my eyes, as though Munna’s status had suddenly risen in my estimation.
